DEN HAAG – Na Beieren slaat ook Michigan alarm over de teruglopende handel met Nederland. Het parlement van de Amerikaanse staat roept minister Timmermans (Buitenlandse Zaken) op het Nederlandse consulaat-generaal in Chicago open te houden. In een verklaring wijst het parlement van Michigan erop dat het Midden-Westen van de VS niet alleen meer dan een miljoen inwoners van Nederlandse oorsprong telt en dat een groot aantal steden door de Nederlanders werden gesticht, maar ook dat de handel met Nederland van vitaal belang is.
„Een volle 27% van de Nederlandse export naar de VS gaat naar Illinois, Ohio en Michigan”, zo staat in de verklaring. In die laatste staat groeit de Nederlandse export zelfs fors. „Het sluiten van het consulaat-generaal in de regio zal slecht zijn voor de groeiende economische activiteit en de speciale relatie tussen Nederland en Michigan.”
Het kabinet bezuinigt EUR 100 miljoen op het diplomatiekepostennetwerk. Dat betekent onder meer dat de consulaten in München, Milaan, Antwerpen, Osaka en Chicago dicht gaan. Onder werkgevers is zeer veel weerstand tegen het besluit, omdat het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven juist in deze regio’s veel geld verdient. De consulaten helpen ondernemers met vergunningen en met toetreding of verkenning van de lokale markt. Ze vervullen daardoor een belangrijke rol voor onze buitenlandse handel.
De Beierse deelstaatpremier Seehofer drong er onlangs bij premier Rutte op aan om van de sluiting van het consulaat in München af te zien, en ook de Nederlandse bedrijven in Beieren vrezen sterke terugloop van hun orders.De Vlamingen zijn eveneens sceptisch. In de Tweede Kamer wordt de druk op het kabinet opgevoerd om de sluiting van de consulaten (deels) ongedaan te maken.
„Dat Michigan nu ook boos is, is andermaal een bevestiging dat we met deze bezuiniging snijden in gezond vlees”, zegt Kamerlid Sjoerdsma van D66. „Zowel Beieren als in Michigan zeggen ze: hier wordt geld verdiend met hulp van het consulaat-generaal, dus sluit het niet. Dat signaal mag het kabinet niet negeren.”
Sjoerdsma stelt Kamervragen naar aanleiding van de noodsignalen uit het buitenland. Regeringspartij VVD heeft ook grote moeite met het sluiten van posten in gebieden die economisch floreren. De liberalen broeden op een oplossing. Minister Kamp (Economische Zaken) zegde de Kamer deze week toe dat het kabinet kijkt naar alternatieve ondersteuning voor ondernemers in buitenlandse regio’s waar consulaten sluiten.
